Whether you live in a downtown Toronto condo, a Mississauga townhome or a family home in Brampton, one thing is true for almost everyone in the GTA: there's never quite enough space. And with holiday gatherings, winter coats and boots, and extra guests on the way, November is the perfect time to get your home working smarter.
Here are nine practical ideas to free up room and make your space feel bigger and calmer.
1. Start with a quick declutter
The easiest square footage to gain is the space you're already using for things you don't need. Go room by room and pull out anything you haven't used in a year. Donate, sell or recycle it before the holiday rush. Fewer items means less to store and less to clean.
2. Go vertical
When floor space is tight, look up. Tall bookcases, wall-mounted shelves and over-the-door organizers use the wall height most rooms waste. In kitchens, a few hooks or a rail under the upper cabinets can hold mugs, utensils or towels and clear your counters.
3. Make your entryway work harder
GTA winters mean bulky coats, boots and wet mitts. A slim boot tray, a row of wall hooks and a small bench with storage underneath can keep the mess contained at the door instead of spreading through the house. Rotate summer items out to a closet or bin so only this season's gear is by the door.
4. Choose furniture that does double duty
An ottoman with hidden storage, a bed with drawers underneath, a drop-leaf or extendable dining table, or a sofa bed for overnight guests can each replace two pieces of furniture. For holiday hosting, an extendable table is one of the best investments a smaller home can make.
5. Use the space under the bed
Low, lidded bins under the bed are perfect for out-of-season clothing, extra bedding or gift wrap. If your bed sits too low, inexpensive bed risers can add several inches of storage.
6. Organize inside your closets
Most closets have unused space above the rod and on the floor. Add a second shelf up high for bins, a hanging organizer for sweaters, and matching slim hangers, which take up noticeably less room than bulky plastic or wooden ones.
7. Let light do the work
Mirrors and good lighting make a room feel larger. A large mirror across from a window bounces natural light around, which matters during our short November days. Swap a heavy floor lamp for wall sconces or plug-in wall lights to free up a corner.
8. Keep your colour palette light and consistent
Light, warm neutrals on walls and big pieces of furniture help a space feel open. Using a consistent palette from room to room also makes a home flow better, which is especially helpful in open-concept condos.
9. Give everything a home
The best organizing tip is also the simplest: every item needs a spot. Baskets for remotes and chargers, a drawer for mail, a tray for keys. When everything has a place, tidying up before guests arrive takes minutes instead of hours.
Thinking about more space for real?
